Beyond the Cuisine: A Journey Through Emirati Culture

– Raveena Choudhary, MGB 2024.

As an MGB student at SP Jain Global, I had the privilege of participating in numerous industry visits as part of our global learning activities. These experiences were a cornerstone of the program, allowing me to gain valuable insights into real-world business operations while excelling in my soft skills. These visits provided a hands-on understanding of industry practices and deepened my knowledge in a way that classroom learning alone couldn’t achieve.

During my Emirati dinner experience, I encountered several memorable moments and cultural insights that significantly contributed to my personal and academic growth. Here are some of the highlights:

Cultural Exchange: One of the most enriching aspects of the Emirati dinner was the opportunity to engage in a meaningful cultural exchange with locals. I had the chance to interact with Emirati hosts and learn about their traditions, values, and way of life. This experience broadened my cultural awareness and taught me the importance of respecting and appreciating different customs.

Traditional Cuisine: The Emirati dinner showcased the rich and diverse flavours of traditional Emirati cuisine. Trying various dishes like Al Harees, Al Majboos, and Luqaimat delighted the taste buds. Through this culinary experience, I discovered new Flavours and understood the significance of food in Emirati culture and how it brings people together.

Hospitality and Generosity: The Emirati displayed incredible hospitality and generosity throughout the dinner. They welcomed us warmly and made sure we felt comfortable during our time with them. Witnessing this level of kindness and care made me reflect on my values and inspired me to be more open and hospitable towards others.

Traditional Attire: The Emirati dinner allowed me to observe locals dressed in their traditional attire, such as the Kandura for men and the Abaya for women. Learning about the historical and cultural significance of these garments was enlightening, and it reminded me of the importance of preserving one’s cultural identity.

Insights into History and Traditions: During the dinner, our hosts shared stories about the UAE’s history and the evolution of their traditions over time. Hearing about their ancestors’ struggles and achievements gave me a profound appreciation for the region’s heritage and its impact on modern-day Emirati society.

Language and Communication: Engaging in conversations with locals allowed me to practice the Arabic language. Even with my limited proficiency, the effort to communicate in their native language was well-received, and it encouraged me to continue learning Arabic after the dinner.

Academic Relevance: This experience had significant academic relevance as a student. It broadened my understanding of cultural anthropology, sociology, and international relations and provided me with valuable insights for future academic research and cross-cultural studies.

Respect for Traditions: Through this immersive experience, I learned the importance of respecting and preserving traditional practices in the UAE and all cultures. It made me more conscious of the need to safeguard cultural heritage and contribute to its sustainability.

In conclusion, the Emirati dinner was an eye-opening and transformative experience that impacted my personal and academic growth. It fostered cultural understanding, taught me the significance of tradition and hospitality, and expanded my worldview. These insights will undoubtedly continue to influence my perspectives, relationships, and academic pursuits in the future.
