Exploring Boundless Possibilities in the World of Data – Devashish Upadhyay’s BDS Journey

Hello, I’m Devashish, a Junior Business Intelligence Analyst at Greenstone Financial Services, and I’m excited to share my journey from student life to my current role. My three-year academic expedition at SP Jain School of Global Management in Sydney, Australia, laid the groundwork for a career fuelled by passion, curiosity, and a commitment to excellence.

Academic and Extracurricular Foundations

My academic journey was enriched with courses in data warehousing, machine learning, and Python programming, laying the foundation for what was to come. SP Jain Global actively encouraged internships, providing a bridge between academic learning and real-world applications. The Tamid club, which I was part of, played a crucial role in improving my financial analytical skills through educational sessions and competitions.

Internships and Work Experiences

As a Data Engineer at Geneva Capital Pte in Singapore, I delved into the fast-paced world of transforming raw data into usable formats. The exposure not only strengthened my technical skills but also instilled a deep understanding of industry-level expectations.

Internships at ACG, Mumbai, and Afreeca Invest were equally enriching. SP Jain Global’s support played a pivotal role in helping me secure these opportunities, providing platforms to apply technical skills learned in classrooms.

This symbiotic relationship between academic institutions and industry placements has been integral to my holistic development, showcasing the effectiveness of a well-rounded education coupled with practical experiences.

Networking and Mentorship

Attending networking events for startups and industry giants like Google and Microsoft became a cornerstone of my journey. These events not only kept me updated on market trends but also expanded my professional network, allowing me to learn from diverse perspectives. While I didn’t have formal mentorship, interactions with seasoned professionals at these events provided invaluable guidance.

Overcoming Challenges

The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Patience and consistency became my guiding principles. Consistent practice of coding skills and the patience to persist through setbacks were instrumental. These challenges weren’t roadblocks but stepping stones, each contributing to personal growth and resilience.

Advice for Aspiring Data Scientists/Analysts

Reflecting on my experiences, I would like to offer two pieces of advice. Firstly, technical skills are crucial, but don’t overlook the importance of a behavioural and problem-solving mindset. Employers seek a holistic skill set. Stay consistent throughout the journey, continually practising and refining your skills.

The Current Chapter: Junior Business Intelligence Analyst

Now, as a Junior Business Intelligence Analyst at Greenstone Financial Services, my role involves integrating and developing business intelligence data products. I analyse business data to provide valuable insights, collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement data models and create reports and dashboards. My aim is to contribute to a better understanding of market trends and customer behaviour, utilising my skills in SQL, Python, Tableau, and more.

Closing Thoughts

As I reflect on this transformative journey, I am grateful for the experiences, challenges, and support that shaped me. My story is not just mine; it’s an invitation for aspiring data scientists/analysts to embrace their unique journeys. With a foundation built on education, internships, networking, and resilience, the path from student to professional is a thrilling adventure waiting to unfold.

Let’s continue this journey together, exploring the boundless possibilities that the world of data offers.
