Could you share your background, including your education and early career experience?

Growing up in Ludhiana, Punjab, I was surrounded by a community that valued hard work, resilience, and adaptability. These early influences shaped my approach to life and work, instilling in me essential qualities in today’s fast-paced, globalised world. I pursued a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Hotel Administration from IHM PUSA, New Delhi, where I developed a strong foundation in management principles, customer service excellence, and operational efficiency.

Being awarded the Young Hotelier of the Year – India 2022 by Hotelier India was a significant milestone in my career. This recognition affirmed my dedication to excellence and my ability to drive results. It also sparked a desire to expand my horizons and apply my skills in a broader context, leading me to pursue a Global MBA at SP Jain School of Global Management. I saw the MBA as an opportunity to build upon my existing skills and gain new insights into global business practices.

How did living and studying in Sydney contribute to your personal and professional development, and what unique cultural insights did you gain from your time there?

Living and studying in Sydney during my Global MBA at SP Jain Global was a transformative experience that deeply enriched my personal and professional development. Compared to my time in Singapore’s fast-paced environment, Sydney offered a unique mix of a dynamic business landscape and a laid-back lifestyle. The city’s multicultural atmosphere enhanced my adaptability and communication skills and highlighted the importance of inclusivity in diverse settings. I gained valuable cultural insights, particularly the Australian emphasis on work-life balance, which taught me that productivity can coexist with personal well-being. The spirit of “mateship,” promoting mutual support and camaraderie, fostered a strong sense of community within our cohort, encouraging collaborative learning. Sydney’s focus on innovation and respect for its indigenous heritage further inspired me to think creatively and value diverse perspectives, shaping my strategic thinking and leadership approach.

What were the most significant industry or business insights you gained in Sydney?

My time in Sydney was enriched by hands-on industry experiences that brought classroom lessons to life. We had the opportunity to visit a chocolate factory, where I learned about supply chain management, quality control, and the importance of sustainable sourcing practices. The visit illustrated how businesses can be both profitable and socially responsible.

Another highlight was our trip to the Hunter Valley, a region famous for its wine and cheese. This excursion provided insights into the agritourism industry and the intricacies of branding and marketing specialty products in a competitive market. It was enlightening to understand how local businesses leverage their heritage and innovate to stay relevant.

Moreover, studying under faculty who are industry leaders greatly enhanced my learning experience. Their real-world expertise bridged the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application. They shared firsthand insights into current market trends, challenges, and strategies, preparing me to tackle complex business issues confidently and creatively.

How did participating in extracurricular activities enhance your overall learning experience in the city? Were there any specific experiences or activities that significantly impacted you?

Participating in extracurricular activities in Sydney profoundly enhanced my overall learning experience by allowing me to engage with the community, appreciate Australia’s natural beauty, and give back to society. These activities offered practical lessons that complemented my academic studies and enriched my understanding of Australian culture.

One memorable experience was whale watching off the coast of Sydney. Witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was awe-inspiring. It heightened my awareness of environmental conservation and the importance of sustainable practices—a perspective that is increasingly crucial in today’s global business environment.

Our trip to Canberra to visit the National War Memorial was particularly impactful. The memorial’s profound tribute to the sacrifices made by Australian servicemen and women deepened my appreciation for the country’s history and values, such as courage, resilience, and mateship. This experience underscored the significance of honouring heritage and understanding the historical context within which a nation develops its identity.

Exploring the Blue Mountains was another highlight that connected me with Australia’s indigenous heritage and natural landscapes. The breathtaking scenery and the stories of the land shared by locals emphasised the importance of preserving cultural and environmental treasures. This reinforced my belief in sustainable tourism and responsible business practices that respect the community and the environment.

Beyond these explorations, I grabbed onto opportunities to volunteer as well. I was privileged to contribute to the TCS Sydney Marathon 2024 and the 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 Western Sydney. Volunteering at these major sporting events was incredibly rewarding. It provided an opportunity to support athletes worldwide and be part of events promoting health, determination, and community spirit. Engaging with participants and fellow volunteers fostered a sense of camaraderie and taught me the value of teamwork and organisational skills on a large scale.

Participating in these extracurricular activities significantly enhanced my learning experience by bridging theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. They allowed me to develop a deeper connection with the city, understand the social fabric of Australian society, and recognise the importance of contributing positively to the community wherever I am.

Looking ahead, how do you plan to apply the knowledge and experiences gained from your time at SP Jain Global for your future, and what advice would you give prospective students considering a Global MBA?

Looking ahead, I plan to leverage the rich knowledge and diverse experiences I’ve gained at SP Jain Global to propel my career into roles that require a global perspective and strategic leadership. The Global MBA program has equipped me with a deeper understanding of international business practices, enhanced my cultural intelligence, and refined my strategic thinking skills. The exposure to different industries through visits, combined with insights from faculty who are industry leaders, has provided me with practical knowledge that I can apply directly to real-world business challenges.
