Embracing Motherhood and Ambition: My Journey Through EMBA as a New Mom

-Leena Jeslin, ME-EMBA 2024 Intake

I‘m a proud mother of two, and my younger child is just a month old. Balancing family, career, and personal growth has been a journey of resilience and determination, which I embrace wholeheartedly.

My career has been rooted in technology and business, where I implement creative and innovative solutions. Currently, I’m affiliated with e& UAE, where I integrate emerging technologies to drive growth, particularly in the EdTech space. At e&, I manage the ‘GoLearning’ project, which won the Middle East Technology Excellence Award in Education.

As I progressed in my career, I realised that I needed a broader perspective on leadership, strategy, and innovation to step into a leadership role. The rapidly evolving technological innovation landscape, especially in the EdTech industry, demanded a deeper understanding of global business trends and strategic decision-making.

Pursuing an Executive MBA (EMBA) at SP Jain Global was a strategic decision aligned with my aspiration.

It may sound difficult, but motherhood didn’t slow me down—it inspired me to push harder. I resumed the EMBA classes just after 10 days of my delivery, mainly because I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to learn alongside my batchmates. My mother always encouraged me to aim higher and never settle, and I wanted to set the same example for my children.

There were days when I had to attend classes while caring for my newborn—baby in one arm, laptop in the other. It was challenging but taught me to adapt and stay focused under pressure.

The Engaged Learning Online (ELO) technology at SP Jain Global was a game-changer. It provided a classroom-like experience, allowing me to attend live, interactive classes from anywhere, build strong bonds with batchmates, and revisit recorded sessions when I needed flexibility. This flexibility was invaluable as I navigated the demands of motherhood and my professional responsibilities.

However, it wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of our Assistant Dean, Dr TP Anand, and Dean, Dr Gary. Their understanding, encouragement, and willingness to accommodate my unique situation made a world of difference.

Parenting teaches you to handle unexpected challenges with patience and adaptability, qualities that are essential in the fast-paced world of technological innovation. Understanding and supporting others has become second nature, enhancing my ability to lead with empathy and build strong, collaborative teams. Juggling multiple roles has also honed my ability to prioritise and execute tasks swiftly, a skill that translates seamlessly into managing complex projects.

These experiences have enriched my EMBA journey, allowing me to contribute unique perspectives in decision-making, crisis management, and leadership discussions.

The SP Jain Global EMBA has been a transformative experience, apart from ELO, thanks to its strong focus on real-world applicability through case studies, simulations, and practical insights. Learning alongside professionals from diverse industries has broadened my perspective on global business dynamics. The program’s emphasis on leadership, innovation, and strategic decision-making aligns perfectly with my goals of driving technological innovation in education.

It has significantly enhanced my ability to contribute to the EdTech industry—sharpening my strategic thinking, financial acumen, and decision-making skills. I’m better equipped to lead digital transformation, implement AI-driven solutions, and effectively manage large-scale projects.

To new mothers considering an EMBA or further education—don’t wait for the “perfect time.” Start now and adjust along the way. Flexible online and hybrid models like ELO make balancing studies with family and work easier.

Build a strong support system—my husband’s support was invaluable—and plan carefully with a structured schedule, task delegation, and realistic goals. Most importantly, see your education as an investment in yourself and your future. It empowers you, creates new opportunities, and sets a powerful example for your children.

My journey is proof that it’s possible to thrive in all areas—family, career, and education—without compromising on any. If my story inspires even one mother to take the leap, it’s worth sharing.
