When a Tech Mind Starts Thinking Like a Business

–-Rameez Rangwala, EMBA Graduate of 2021
With over 14 years of experience in technology and innovation, I’ve spent most of my career focused on building systems, solving technical challenges, and delivering projects. While my technical foundation was strong, I reached a point where I wanted to broaden my perspective—especially on the business and management side.
My primary motivation for pursuing an Executive MBA was to understand that side and apply that knowledge to real-world challenges.
Moving beyond execution to strategic thinking
Coming from a technical background, I wanted to move beyond execution and start thinking more strategically—understanding how decisions are made and how they impact the business as a whole.
When I was evaluating programs, SP Jain Global stood out to me for its strong legacy and for how its curriculum aligned with what I was looking for at that stage in my career.

Learning through diverse perspectives
One of the most valuable aspects was learning from experienced faculty and interacting with peers from diverse professional backgrounds. This exposure helped me look at problems from different perspectives and move beyond a purely technical approach.
The program also gave me the confidence to approach challenges differently and take greater ownership in my role.

Adapting to a new way of learning
I have always been a strong advocate for on-campus learning because of the direct interaction and engagement it offers.
However, due to COVID, the program transitioned to the ELO (Engaged Learning Online) format. While it was different from the classroom experience, it ensured continuity in learning during a very uncertain time. In many ways, ELO played an important role when institutions across the world were still adapting to remote education.
One of the most impactful parts of my EMBA journey was my final-year project.
What stood out the most was the research process. I spent a significant amount of time reading, analysing, and documenting, which was both challenging and rewarding. It pushed me to go deeper into topics than I had before.
Shifting to a holistic business mindset
The EMBA has had a meaningful impact on how I approach my professional responsibilities. I now look at situations more holistically, considering not just the technical aspects but also the business implications. It has helped me become more confident, more composed while handling challenges, and more conscious of the commercial impact of decisions.
One of the biggest shifts has been taking complete ownership—approaching my role as if I were managing my own business.

Advice for future EMBA candidates
For anyone considering an EMBA, my advice would be to choose a program that aligns with your long-term goals.
It’s important to be clear about what you want to achieve and select a program or specialisation that supports that vision. Also, be mindful of how you invest your time and focus on what truly adds value to your growth.
